Many people around the world study the Italian language; even though it isn’t spoken in a wide geographical area or by large numbers of people, many foreign students choose to learn it. Why study Italian? It partly depends on the personal projects of those studying it, however there are several motivations that go beyond the individual sphere. Italian is the language of Opera and of music, but also that of the Made in Italy: Italian art, fashion and food. Italian is also the official language of the Vatican City and is central for the Catholic religious world.

In an interview on the future of Italian language diffusion, Prof. Paolo Balboni of Ca’ Foscari University in Venice stated that the desire to learn Italian stems from passion, not necessity. Studying Italian means having a motivation which is linked to passion for culture and the urge to study the «language in which these passions flower».
