Easter is a very important Christian holiday which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It doesn’t have a fixed date, but it falls on Sunday, usually between March and April. In the year 2019 it is celebrated on April 21.

Easter traditions

One of the traditions of the Italian Easter is to give chocolate Easter eggs. This tradition is quite recent, but since the Middle Ages the custom was to give decorated chicken eggs, painted or dyed.

You can find on the market a large quantity of eggs of different sizes and flavors made with milk, dark or white chocolate. You can choose between industrial or artisanal eggs. The peculiarity of these eggs is that inside them there is a surprise: a small gadget or a toy for the joy of all the children and all the adults.

The colomba is a traditional Easter cake shaped like a dove, symbol of peace and serenity.

Immediately after Easter Sunday is Easter Monday “Pasquetta”. Another typical tradition of this holiday is that Italian people usually spend this day with friends having picnic. Unfortunately, however, Easter Mondays are often rainy.

There is a nice proverb in Italian that says: “At Christmas with your parents, at Easter with whom you want!” The meaning is that Christmas is a holiday to be spent with family, while Easter is a holiday to be spent with who you want, family or friends, whatever, there isn’t a fixed rule.
